Rangala House is a converted tea-planter’s bungalow in the hills above Kandy, central Sri Lanka. It is owned and run by two friends and ex-neighbours of ours (from when we were living in Bristol), Sam and Anthony. They also run the wonderful Kandyan Restaurant in Bristol.
The house has been theirs since 2003 and they've poured so much into the various renovations and developments. Sam, who grew up "down the road", has developed an extensive market garden on part of the property, with many of the ingredients being served up by the kitchen team (and even making their way to the Bristol restaurant).
The Dumbara Kanduvetiya ("Misty Mountains", later named the "Knuckles Mountains" by colonists) are nearby, which provide some beautiful walking (to be covered in a future story, as this one has grown large enough!).
We visited, and were superbly well looked after, in February 2025 over 4 nights, having taken the train up to Kandy from Ella. The house, its 5 guest bedrooms, and its surroundings are truly beautiful; the immediate garden is immaculately designed and maintained, whilst the surrounding hills are covered in vast forests and tea plantations...
